Chapter 17 Summary

Looking out the attic window, the posse watches as Dr. Egan gets in his car with the jewelry box and drives toward town. Griffin, over the computer, tells everyone to follow. As he considers what the team must do, Griffin begins to believe they need him to make sure everything goes smoothly. Since his father will see him if he rides his bike, Griffin gets his in-line skates and begins to skate toward the only jewelry store in Cedarville. He arrives, nearly crashing into Savannah on her bike as the other members of the team run up. They all take positions outside the jewelry store. Looking through the window, they see Dr. Egan open the jewelry box. They rush inside, with Griffin raising a camera to take a picture of what turns out to be an antique gold brooch.

Chapter 18 Summary

Detective Vizzini fixes an electric monitoring anklet on Griffin’s leg. The officer explains that police will be signaled and Griffin will be arrested if he goes more than 200 feet from the monitor, disturbs the monitor, or turns it off. Though he denies he is guilty, his parents point out that his attempts to prove his innocence have just made matters worse. His father says, “You don’t need me to tell you you’re in deep trouble here” (139). All of the members of the posse are also in trouble and have been told not to have any dealings with Griffin.

Chapter 19 Summary

Though Griffin is locked away from his friends, members of the posse still try to investigate the theft of the ring. Pitch breaks into Celia’s office and goes through her things to see if the ring is there. Ben takes a metal detector and runs it over Vader’s gym bag, only to be discovered and drenched with Gatorade. An email Melissa discovers, in which Tony has tried to find out the value of a Super Bowl ring, implicates him as the thief. Some still believe that Dr. Egan is the prime suspect. The posse realizes that Mr. Clancy, the custodian, has a lifelong hatred of the Jets because they beat his favorite team, the Colts, in the Super Bowl. They realize he must have a copy of the key to the trophy case and therefore should also be on the list of suspects.

Chapter 20 Summary

As she cleans the attic after the command center debacle, Savannah notices a small cache of shiny objects on a high shelf. Instantly, she realizes what happened to the Super Bowl ring. She dashes to Griffin’s house and tells his mother she must see him. She explains to Griffin that a pack rat that had been in her house found Griffin’s retainer. Somehow, the rat took the retainer—transported in Savannah’s backpack—to the school, where he swapped it for the Super Bowl ring. This meant the ring was in the middle school building in the rat’s nest. Griffin’s skeptical reaction was disappointing. “She expected him to be excited—overjoyed—jumping and cheering. Instead, he lay down on his bed, looking even gloomier than before” (153). Because of his doubtful response, Savannah leaves in a state of despair.

Chapter 21 Summary

In the JFK lunchroom and feeling lonely and depressed, Griffin accidentally exposes the anklet he wears. All the kids stare at him, and, as they leave, various tough kids nod at him, showing their respect. Amazed, Griffin thinks, “The only thing worse than attending Jail For Kids was belonging there” (159).

Seeing the anklet, Shank confronts Griffin, demanding to know why he is in JFK. After all the days of concealing why he is at the alternative school, Griffin pours out his heart, explaining the stolen ring and what the posse has done to help him. He tells Shank the outlandish story of the pack rat. Shank immediately confirms Savannah’s idea and tells Griffin he knows how to catch the rat and will help him prove his innocence.

Chapters 17-21 Analysis

This third section of the narrative offers a period of stark reality, quiet questioning, and amazing discovery. The ultimate failure of Operation Stakeout—when Griffin and the members of the posse, expecting to find the stolen ring, rush into a jewelry shop and instead see Dr. Egan with a gold brooch—results in what the principal refers to as “consequences” for all involved. For the first time, the group apart from Griffin devised a plan that was more elaborate and time consuming than anything they had created before. When the operation seems about to succeed, they discover that their assumptions have been incorrect, that False Evidence Appearing Real—the red herring of a blue jewelry box—had doomed their plan. They not only have failed to solve the mystery but also have incurred punishment for themselves and even greater punishment for Griffin, who did not conceive the idea but suffers most for its failure. Even when they group finds themselves separated from Griffin and each other, grounded by their parents, and castigated in the daily newspaper, they Never Give Up. Instead, in the next chapter, the posse is back at work, checking up on those individuals whom they suspect of being potential thieves.

This third section confirms both The Necessity of Loyal Friends and the group’s commitment to proving Griffin’s innocence. It also reveals their closest interaction with one another and their growing courage. In Chapter 19, they demonstrate their bravery when several members of the posse wander through the darkened hallways of the school searching for the storage area where Mr. Curtis keeps his private effects. Earlier in the chapter, they discuss the stealthy ways they have checked up on other suspects, even personally confronting them, and their actions reveal their resolve not to allow Griffin to be unfairly persecuted.

Finally, this section contains simple elements of serendipity that ultimately resolve the mystery. If Logan and Ben had not started a fight in Savannah’s attic, she would not have had to clean up the mess they made. If she had not cleaned up the mess, she would never have noticed the shiny objects on the upper shelf that indicate the presence of a pack rat. If she had not explained her theory to Griffin—even though he didn’t believe or accept it at the time—he would never have shared this information the next day with Shank. If Shank’s family had not been involved in removing nuisance animals, he would never have known the validity of Savannah’s insight and been able to start in motion the one plan that will work.
