Chapters 19-36 Analysis

Autumn and Finny’s friends fight over a table in the lunchroom, marking the only real moment of tension between the two friend groups. Autumn has approached Finny’s friends as her enemies because they developed diverse views of the world, but up to this point his friend group has not engaged in any bullying. The conflict quickly ends when Autumn confronts Finny, suggesting that Finny still has Autumn’s back despite the end of their friendship. This is underscored when Finny requests that his friends, including Sylvie, try and be nicer to Autumn. Not only does this illustrate how Finny is a kind and gentle person; it also suggests that Finny’s feelings for Autumn are not as indifferent or negative as Autumn has come to believe.

These chapters explore underage drinking. Finny comes home drunk and ends up talking to Autumn one-on-one for the first time in months. This foreshadows moments in Autumn’s life when drinking will play a role, occasionally with Finny. Underaged drinking is handled lightly and through the eyes of youth who do not fully appreciate the dangers of drinking to excess. The novel brings into question the motivation behind this drinking, something that will be explored at a later date with Sylvie.

There are moments of foreshadowing throughout these chapters. Finny begins to drive and Angelina worries he might die in a car accident, foreshadowing his death. When Finny appears injured during the soccer game, Autumn wonders what life would be like without him. Autumn’s parents fight on Thanksgiving and begin marriage counseling, foreshadowing a larger riff in the family dynamic. Angelina tells Autumn to marry her first love, putting in her head the idea of first loves and making her wonder if hers is Jamie or Finny. Jamie begins hanging out with Sasha without Autumn, foreshadowing a connection between them and Jamie’s cheating. Angie accuses Autumn of being pregnant, foreshadowing the novel’s end. When Autumn tells Finny she is a virgin, his reaction foreshadows the reveal of his feelings for her. Autumn’s feelings for him are foreshadowed by her jealousy over Sasha; Sasha, unlike Autumn, is brave enough to break up with someone she doesn’t truly want to be with.

Little things begin to open up Autumn to the idea of something more romantic between her and Finny. Their elementary school teacher, for example, says that she always knew they would end up together. The combination of these things and Autumn’s growing maturity facilitates her realization: She doesn’t just love Finny differently than the other people in her life; she is in love with him. This foreshadows the moment when they enter into an intimate relationship.

These sections continue to paint a contrast between Jamie and Finny. Jamie wants Autumn to be a teacher and has her nearly convinced it would be better for their future marriage and family, even though her passion is creative writing. When Autumn tells Finny this, he reacts negatively to Jamie’s opinion, showing how he is the better match. Jamie slams into Autumn’s eye while sledding. In contrast, Finny takes care of her and makes her an ice packet. The narrative also shows how Finny and Autumn are well-suited when both jump into the leaf piles.

Autumn’s discussion with her friends about life’s meaning foreshadow later events. Autumn insists that life is about experiencing beauty, even death and beauty’s darker side. Jamie disagrees, and they both decide they would not be willing to die for the other. At the end of the novel, Autumn will attempt suicide after Finny dies, a contrast with what she says to Jamie.
