Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Grisha Powers Comparison”

In this activity, students will visualize the social hierarchy of Ravka and the Grishaverse. Then, they will imagine social change in Ravka based on a different allotment of resources.

When Alina visits the King’s Palace, she has doubts about the fairness of the allotment of resources in Ravka. Create a visual of the social hierarchy of the Grisha, The First and Second Armies, and others in the novel based on their current ranking in Shadow and Bone. Then,  envision and create the social hierarchy with a more even allotment of resources    . Explain your altered model using details from the novel to support your claim. Consider using the steps below to construct your response.

  • Create a list of the Ravka’s people with Grisha powers and rankings.
  • Decide the usefulness of each ranking based on details from the novel.
  • Explain how you would allot resources more evenly.
  • Create an argument to support your adjusted rankings.
  • Present your new hierarchy and your argument to support your thinking.

Write a reflection on what this activity reveals about our society or societies in general.

Teaching Suggestion: One way to discuss the social hierarchy of the Grishaverse is to host a class discussion on the social hierarchy in Shadow and Bone.
