Stephanie S. Tolan is an American author of children’s and young adult fiction. She has a master’s degree in English from Purdue University and is a senior fellow at the Institute for Educational Advancement. Tolan’s extensive experience in writing for children and young adults significantly influences the tone and approach of Surviving the Applewhites. The novel maintains a tone that is both humorous and immediate, exploring concepts relevant to children and teenagers, such as self-discovery and challenges in friendship. Beyond its entertainment value, the book serves an educational and inspirational purpose, portraying the transformative journeys of Jake and E.D. These characters undergo growth and change, highlighting the profound impact of community and family on individual development.
Stephanie Tolan is also an advocate for exceptionally bright children, drawing from her own experience with her gifted son. Through this experience, she became aware of the detrimental effects of forcing children to conform to societal norms that do not align with their unique abilities and personalities. This realization sparked her advocacy, emphasizing the importance of embracing and celebrating human diversity rather than enforcing uniformity. She co-authored the award-winning nonfiction book Guiding the Gifted Child and has written extensively about the challenges faced by gifted children as they navigate their place in the world. In Surviving the Applewhites, Tolan explores the theme of Individuality Versus Conformity. E.D. is a gifted child struggling to find her place within her family. She embarks on a journey of self-discovery, learning to embrace her unique talents and strengths. Similarly, Jake learns the significance of honoring individuality and authenticity over conformity.
Surviving the Applewhites is the first book in a trilogy that follows the adventures of the Applewhite family. The series continues with Applewhites at Wit’s End, published in 2012, and Applewhites Coast to Coast, published in 2017. Surviving the Applewhites introduces most of the characters featured in the sequels. While it can be read independently, examining it within the broader context of the trilogy offers a deeper understanding of the characters and their evolving story.
Applewhites at Wit’s End picks up a few months after the events of the first book. Following the success of The Sound of Music production, Jake, now passionate about performing, lands the role of the Artful Dodger in a production of Oliver! directed by Randolph. However, financial struggles loom as Randolph informs the family that they are broke. Their inventive solution is running a summer camp for creative kids. Once again, as in the prequel, the Applewhites must unite to overcome this challenge.
In Applewhites Coast to Coast, the saga of the Applewhite family reaches new heights with even more extravagant adventures. Inspired by Jeremy Bernstein’s idea, they embark on an Education Expedition: a cross-country road trip in a bus, blending education, adventure, and a chance to win a significant cash prize. A new character is introduced—Bernstein’s niece, Melody. As usual, the Applewhites face a series of humorous challenges during their trip.
All novels feature a rich tapestry of characters brimming with personality and depth. Through her storytelling, Tolan weaves humor into the relatable ups and downs of family life, offering young readers both entertainment and valuable insights.
