Chapter 11 Summary

Weakened from hunger and the infected stump of his finger, Casteel still manages to kill a Craven that invades his cell and uses its bones to make a makeshift weapon.

Afterward, Malik arrives. Casteel is furious at his brother’s alliance with Isbeth, but Malik remains calm. He offers Casteel medical aid for his infected hand but avoids directly addressing why he remains with Isbeth. Before he leaves, Malik warns Casteel that his infection will spread without blood and suggests that Casteel’s reunion with Poppy may be imminent.

Chapter 12 Summary

As Poppy prepares for battle, Valyn enters and compares her appearance to a painting of Lailah, the Goddess of Peace and Vengeance. Valyn admits he knew the truth about Isbeth but remained silent. He explains that he and Eloana withheld the truth for fear of what it might mean for Atlantia. Though Poppy remains angry at him, Valyn says he wants to air things out between them as there might not be another opportunity. Poppy then rides out to lead the army. She joins Kieran and notices Hisa sharing a tender moment with the wolven general, Lizeth.
