When Thursday arrives at Hannah’s house, she realizes that Hannah got new planters. She wonders what else has changed in the time that she has been away and rings Hannah’s doorbell. Hannah answers the door looking confused, but Thursday is quick to tell her that she wanted to check on her after the voicemail she had sent. Hannah asks who Thursday has come to see, saying that she doesn’t know Thursday. Thursday tries to get Hannah to recognize her and tells her that she is also married to Seth. Hannah tells her that there must be a mistake and that she should get her husband to see if he can help her. Hannah closes the door, leaving Thursday to stumble back to her car confused.
In the car, Thursday thinks about how disoriented she feels. She blames it on the medicine she has been taking, saying that it makes her feel unsure of herself. She has decided to hide in one of the houses that Seth is renovating. Thursday finds the bedroom and lies down, quickly falling asleep.
Thursday drives to Regina’s office. As Thursday gets out of her car, she begins to cry; she doesn’t know why she is crying, but she knows something is wrong. After wiping her face, she enters Regina’s office building and walks up to the receptionist’s desk. Thursday tells the woman she has an appointment to see Regina but is told that she missed her appointment.
Thursday pretends to be confused, forcing herself to cry. She tells the receptionist that things have been very mixed up and she is overwhelmed by the divorce. The receptionist steps away to speak with Regina and comes back to tell Thursday that Regina has agreed to skip her lunch in order to speak with her. Thursday is extremely grateful and leaves the office with four hours until her appointment.
Thursday goes to a small boutique and buys a new shirt and jacket, changing into them in her car. As she drives back to Regina’s office, she notices a bar that is open across the street. Thursday decides to go in despite it being early in the day and orders several drinks.
In the bathroom of the bar, Thursday tries to fix her appearance. She walks to a nearby gas station and buys eye drops, body spray, and gum to help counter the effects of her day drinking; she also decides to purchase a burner phone at the last minute.
Seeing Regina in person is surreal for Thursday. She remembers how Seth described her and finds her mesmerizing. Regina asks Thursday to tell her about her situation and why she is trying to get a divorce. Thursday carefully tells Regina that her husband is a polygamist, watching the other woman closely. Regina asks if the wives know about Thursday. Thursday decides to stop acting and asks Regina if she knows about her. Regina calls her by her real name and tells her that Seth had contacted her to tell her that Thursday might try to speak to her. Regina asks Thursday why she is really there to visit her. Thursday tells her she is trying to gain some clarity into who her husband really is and was hoping that Regina could help her.
Regina tells Thursday she doesn’t want to help her. Thursday begins to try and convince Regina by telling her she’d been with Seth for eight years but is interrupted by Regina correcting her. Regina says that she and Seth were together for five years and have been divorced for the last three. Thursday is extremely confused and asks Regina about the plural marriage. Regina tells Thursday she has no idea what she is talking about and that she hasn’t spoken to Seth in years. Regina tells Thursday she should leave, telling her that she needs help. Thursday explodes, yelling that she isn’t sick, and Regina tells her to leave. Thursday asks if Regina had ever met Seth’s parents, and Regina tells her that they died several years ago. Thursday thanks Regina before walking out of her office.
Thursday goes back to Hannah’s house. She rings the doorbell, becoming increasingly anxious about being recognized or seen by anyone. When no one answers, Thursday rings the bell again and peers into the window. She decides to walk around the side of the house and through the gate in the back. Thursday notices that one of the windows is open, and she calls out to Hannah to tell her that she is coming into the house. Thursday removes the screen covering the opened window with one of her keys and climbs through. Thursday makes her way to the master bedroom and begins looking through the drawers to try and find some answers. She notices that there doesn’t seem to be anything that could be worn by a man in any of the drawers or closet.
Thursday continues to look around the house, determined to find evidence that Seth lives there, but continues to come up empty. Thursday remembers smelling something cooking from downstairs and decides to look for the source. She finds a plate of freshly baked cookies and a stack of applications on the counter. Thursday is startled when a voice behind her calls her attention, asking her how she got into the house. Thursday panics and tells the woman that it was a mistake and that she’d let herself out. The woman tries to block Thursday from leaving, but Thursday intimidates her into moving out of the way.
Thursday walks back to her car and drives away. She wonders why Hannah hadn’t mentioned anything about moving away when she saw her last night. More confused than before, Thursday decides that without a phone or computer, the only thing she can do is find out more about Regina.
Thursday reminds herself that she is not “crazy”; Seth is lying, and Hannah has disappeared. She is convinced Regina knows something, and she wonders what Hannah’s involvement is in everything. She wonders whether Seth forced Hannah to give up her house to avoid her finding out the truth about their relationship. She tries to understand why Seth is trying so hard to hide his polygamist relationship, when he technically is only married to one person, and he can’t legally get in trouble.
Thursday drives back to Regina’s office building and waits for Regina to leave for the evening. She follows Regina onto the freeway and to her apartment complex. Thursday can’t believe that someone like Regina would be living in the apartment complex she is in; it doesn’t seem to match her lifestyle at all. Thursday watches Regina enter her apartment and waits a few minutes before walking up to her door and knocking on it.
Regina opens the door and is shocked to see Thursday standing outside. She tries to close the door, but Thursday wedges her foot into the crack. Thursday tells her that she is just here to talk to Regina, and Regina nervously decides to let Thursday into her apartment.
Regina sits as far away from Thursday as possible and asks her what she wants to know. Thursday says she wants to know the truth, and she asks Regina why she said she and Seth were only together for five years. Regina angrily tells her that it is the truth that she and Seth were together for five years; she tells Thursday that she and Seth had gotten divorced because Thursday had an affair with Seth.
Thursday’s head is hurting her as she denies what Regina says. Thursday asks Regina when the last time she really saw Seth was, and Regina admits she saw him last week. She tells Thursday that Seth owes her money because his business went south, and he took out a lot of loans while they were married. Thursday tries to understand what Regina is telling her, but she can’t believe that Seth would never tell her about the money. She catches herself wondering how she could have helped him, but she stops herself, angry that she’s still prioritizing his feelings.
Regina tells Thursday that Seth gave her some money last week and came in person because their dog had died. Thursday asks if Regina and Seth had been having sex when he visits, and Regina doesn’t deny that they have. Thursday asks why Regina is pretending, and Regina tells her that she doesn’t know Hannah. Thursday refuses to believe that.
Thursday tries to extend her visit by telling Regina about her baby and her miscarriage. She describes the child from the brief moments she’d seen him after his birth, saying that he had red hair, and she didn’t know where it had come from. Regina softly tells her that Seth’s mother had red hair.
Thursday asks Regina what happened to Seth’s parents. She reveals that Seth’s father shot and killed his mother before dying by suicide. Regina and Seth had already been married when it happened. Regina says that Seth was obsessed with his father and that they were close; his father had been angry when Seth left with Regina. Thursday asks Regina if she and Seth ever tried to have children. Regina says no, and Thursday asks why she would marry Seth knowing he wanted children. She answers saying that Seth believed he could change her mind, and she believed Seth loved her enough to stop asking.
For some reason, Thursday finds this story extremely familiar, but she is unable to place it. Regina tells Thursday she would like to be alone and escorts her outside. Before Thursday leaves, she tells Regina that Seth has been hitting Hannah and has hurt her too. She leaves the number to the burner phone she purchased earlier that day as she says goodbye.
In the aftermath of leaving the hospital, Thursday begins to struggle with understanding what is real and what is not. She wonders whether her relationship with Hannah was ever real: “[H]ad she never seen me before? Could a person make an entire relationship up?” (232). This moment reveals Thursday is aware of her previous delusions. She says that, in this situation, she would usually contact her doctor, showing that she knows she has experienced this before. This detail is very significant because it strongly juxtaposes what Thursday stated before about not knowing she’d been in a psychiatric ward. It serves as further evidence that Thursday is an unreliable narrator.
Thursday’s uncertainty now haunts her. As she prepares to meet with Regina, she thinks, “Something feels wrong, but I don’t know what” (236). In her insecurity, Thursday reverts to old habits, and she attempts to manage her feelings of instability by focusing on maintaining appearances. However, now that her illusion of perfection has been shattered, she can no longer maintain her denial. No longer sure of how to orient herself or what is real, Thursday dives deeper into her obsession with Regina and Hannah despite knowing that her truth differs from the real one.
A key plot element in this section is that Thursday begins to question Seth’s motives and actions. She wonders whether Seth had said Regina didn’t want children so she “would jump into action, overcompensating for what Regina didn’t do” (257). She also now acknowledges that her miscarriage was the catalyst for her psychological “unraveling.” This line is a callback to an earlier scene in which Thursday refers to her supposed psychosis as her “unraveling.” The two scenes are juxtaposed to show how Thursday’s character has developed through the course of the narrative. She now understands that some part of her truly is ill, but she does not fully know how or to what extent. Instead, she relies on what she believes to be true and continues to strive to learn the truth about Hannah, Seth, and Regina.
