Chapter 50 Summary

Lara Jean prepares for the upcoming ski trip. Chris tells Lara Jean that the skiing trip is famous for being a time and place where the teenagers sneak out of their rooms and go a little wild. Chris says that she had sex the time she went, but Lara Jean is not concerned that Peter will expect that from her. She knows that he is not into her, but she is worried that she’ll have to pretend to sneak off with him in order to save the reputation of their fake relationship. Lara Jean doesn’t want to get into trouble with the school, and she doesn’t want to portray herself as doing things that she would never actually do. She begs Chris to come along to help her through it, and despite her desire to never do anything school-related, Chris agrees.

Chapter 51 Summary

It is Thanksgiving Day, and Lara Jean is stressed about her cooking. She has overcooked the turkey and forgot the mashed potatoes. Their Korean grandmother comes over, and she asks their father if he’s been seeing anyone. Lara Jean and Margot have thought about their father dating before. They’ve agreed that if he does date, they’d like the woman to be funny and kind. Kitty is young enough to still need a mother, and Lara Jean admits to herself that it would be nice to have an older woman around to show her how to do feminine things. Their father seems embarrassed by the conversation, but Lara Jean is happy to have her mother’s mother around.

Chapter 52 Summary

The Covey family is planning their Christmas cookie baking with Peter. They banter over whether fruitcake cookies sound disgusting when the doorbell rings, and Kitty lets in Josh. He is returning a casserole dish, and even though Peter is also there, he stays to eat and talk about the cookies. When Josh asks if they’re going to make his favorite, Peter tells him the list is already quite complete, and Josh retorts that he’s sure his cookies are already on the list. When Josh leaves, and Kitty goes to her room, Peter tells Lara Jean that he thinks Josh is into her. Lara Jean is surprised and certain he’s wrong. Peter bets that Josh will admit his feelings for her soon, but Lara Jean bets that when Margot comes back for Christmas break, she and Josh will get back together. Peter pulls Lara Jean close to him, and Lara Jean is certain he’s about to kiss her. The moment is over once they hear Kitty’s footsteps on the stairs.

Chapter 53 Summary

Josh helps the Covey family bring in their Christmas tree, then sticks around to help decorate. Josh and Lara Jean find themselves alone cleaning up the boxes of ornaments, and Josh tells Lara Jean that he has noticed she acts differently around Peter. Lara Jean disagrees, but the conversation escalates quickly, and Josh asks her why Lara Jean never told him about her feelings for him. He points out that her feelings for him started before he got together with Margot and says that she should have given him a chance. Lara Jean is angry at his suggestion that it would have made a difference and tells him to stop pretending that he ever liked her that way. She accuses him of being jealous of Peter for taking his spot in the family. Josh yells that it’s true, he is jealous, then he kisses Lara Jean on the lips. Lara Jean, shocked, runs upstairs to hide in her room.

Chapters 50-53 Analysis

Lara Jean is cautious about her feelings for Peter. She has been scorned in love before, and she is overall confused about where her life is. She’s not talking to her beloved older sister, she’s in a fake relationship with a popular boy she actually really likes, and meanwhile there is still Josh. So far, Peter and Josh have avoided one another. They’re two different guys who have some sort of interest in Lara Jean, but neither of them has expressed any real feelings for her. Their jealousy of one another is an odd tension for Lara Jean to navigate around. Peter and Josh seem to intuit more from one another than Lara Jean can see, and both of them feel comfortable telling Lara Jean their negative opinions about the other.

When Josh tells Lara Jean she acts differently around Peter, like all the other girls at school do, Lara Jean disagrees. To the reader, this doesn’t seem accurate. After all, Lara Jean calls Peter out on his ego and his inability to take things seriously. She doesn’t let him get away with everything, and she stands her ground. Han uses this interaction to give the reader an opportunity to wonder about Lara Jean’s point of view and self-characterization. It is possible that she acts differently with Peter, but it’s also possible she acts herself with Peter and differently with Josh. Josh’s opinion on this matter doesn’t hold much weight when he kisses Lara Jean in the heat of an argument. This is a crucial plot twist. Lara Jean has worked hard for the entire novel to convince herself that she needs to get over Josh, that Josh is, and always will be, Margot’s. Peter is the first person who senses that Josh is interested in Lara Jean, but it’s hard for the reader to trust Peter’s take on it since he seems jealous that Lara Jean is so close to Josh. Now, both Josh and Lara Jean have betrayed Margot. They haven’t been honest about their feelings, and the end result is this random kiss from Josh.

Ironically, Lara Jean is seeing almost all of her desires come to fruition just as everything is also falling apart. She’s in a relationship with the gorgeous and funny Peter Kavinsky, and even if it’s fake, their friendship is real and she’s enjoying the experience. She’s making new friends and is finally part of a group. She is conquering her fear of driving. She is spending more time with Chris, who will help her navigate the intimidating social situation of the school ski trip. Kitty and Dr. Covey seem happy and well. And of course, her long-term love interest Josh has finally kissed her. Not all fantasies are meant to come true, so now Lara Jean has to be honest with herself and figure out what she truly wants. She must tap into her inner Margot and become decisive.
