STUDY OBJECTIVES: In accomplishing the components of this Unit, students will:
- Develop an understanding of the Tlingit culture and its role in the personal transformation of the novel’s protagonist by exploring their own connection to an animal, as well as by reading and viewing information about the culture.
- Discuss and reflect upon the novel’s symbols by examining their usage and meaning.
- Develop awareness of alternative methods of criminal justice and reformation and consider their impact on the novel’s protagonist.
- Examine the experiences and personal revelations that lead to inner transformation and change, as related to Cole’s character arc.
