Background

Series Context: Twisted Series

Twisted Hate is the third installment in Ana Huang’s self-published Twisted series, which consists of four novels following the interconnected love stories of four friends: Ava Chen (Twisted Love), Bridget von Ascheberg (Twisted Games), Jules Ambrose (Twisted Hate), and Stella Alonso (Twisted Lies). The Twisted novels can be read as standalones, but Huang recommends recommending them in order for the best experience. As a standalone, Twisted Hate spoils Twisted Love and Twisted Games.

Twisted Love follows the romance between Josh Chen’s younger sister, Ava Chen, and his then best friend, Alex Volkov. The novel fleshes out Josh and Ava’s abusive father, Michael, and reveals why he is imprisoned in Twisted Hate. Twisted Love also features Josh and Jules’s interactions before Twisted Hate and introduces relevant characters such as Jules’s friends, Bridget and Stella, and Rhys Larson, Bridget’s bodyguard-turned-love interest in Twisted Games. Twisted Games fleshes out Bridget and Rhys’s relationship, which culminates in their wedding in Twisted Hate. This novel fleshes out Stella and introduces Christian Harper—the owner of Stella and Jules’s apartment building—setting up their romance in Twisted Lies. Twisted Hate also introduces Dante Russo, a protagonist in Huang’s spin-off King of Wrath, one of the seven novels in the Kings of Sin series, which also includes King of Greed.

Genre Context: Romance

While typically overused, tropes are narrative elements with universal appeal. Romance tropes are easily recognizable to readers of the genre, and often elicit comfort or intrigue depending on whether they are played straight or subverted. These tropes are popular because they introduce tension and bring reluctant love interests together. Ana Huang leans heavily into romance tropes, even including featured tropes on her website. Twisted Hate contains several tropes—such as hate-to-love and forced proximity. These tropes further Jules and Josh’s relationship in entertaining, evocative ways that otherwise would not have occurred. Jules is close with Ava, whose brother, Josh, becomes her love interest; despite their mutual connection, Jules and Josh hate each other, but this passion slowly turns into love. The pair’s forced proximity during a ski trip pushes them to spend time together, giving them space to fall in love.
