Consequently, Loubet set up Vivid Viral Media Agency and fake brands for the influencers to promote. Each courier was given a bag of money without being informed of its contents, and several were caught crossing international borders. Loubet assumed that Jeff Nolan was Joe Blow until Jeff threatened him. Loubet responded by having three of the couriers killed. A bag of money was left beside Andrew Fairbanks’s body to clarify the feud was a matter of principle rather than profit.

Part 2, Chapters 26-52 Analysis

Narrative tension builds in these chapters as hitman Eddie Flood pursues Amy, and the main characters narrowly escape being killed by Nelson Nunez. Osman utilizes the classic thriller device of a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase between the protagonist and antagonist. The characters are involved in an ongoing battle of wits as Amy and her friends outsmart and escape the hitman. Osman creates further intrigue through references to Eddie Flood’s hidden agenda for accepting the job. At the same time, this atmosphere of jeopardy is counterbalanced by episodes of lighthearted comedy. Much of the humor in these chapters derives from the characterization of Max Highfield as a vacuous actor who believes the depth of his talent is underappreciated. His pretensions are highlighted by his claim to have “read a lot of Chekhov and Ibsen” to inform his starring role in the Rampage action movies (194). Max’s meeting with Henk van Veen in Chapter 23 amusingly juxtaposes their characters. Henk’s cerebral nature is illustrated by his reflections on the philosophers Spinoza and Kant and his reference to George Eliot’s highbrow novel, Middlemarch. Max’s brief consideration and rejection of an obscure title on 14th-century Iran demonstrates his futile attempts to match Henk’s intellectualism.

Osman explores Personal Growth Arising from Challenges as Steve’s devotion to Amy and desire to protect her supersedes his determination to stay within his comfort zone. In this section of the novel, Steve gradually becomes more open to new experiences while continuing to value the familiar. His inner division between safe choices and the promise of excitement is illustrated during his first flight on a private jet, as he declines sushi and drugs, asking for traditional British snacks, while accepting the pilot’s offer to join her at the flight deck. Steve’s increasing commitment to the investigation is underlined as he uses his Dictaphone to record his thoughts on the murders. The progression of Steve’s character is highlighted as his recent anxiety over driving as far as Letchworth Garden City is contrasted with his global travels.

Steve’s personal attributes are shown to contribute to his investigative abilities. He demonstrates quick thinking under pressure and competency with firearms when he shoots Nelson Nunez and his nephew. However, his people skills are portrayed as equally important. Steve’s ability to charm others is illustrated when he wears away at Carlos Moss’s stern professional exterior, and they bond over their shared passion for Van Halen. He not only makes a friend in Carlos but inspires his loyalty as he continues to help with the case (alluding again to the Importance of Friendship). Steve’s qualities are underlined by Eddie Flood’s lack of success when he similarly attempts to befriend Carlos. Osman suggests that Steve succeeds where Eddie fails due to his authenticity. While Eddie’s untruthful claim to like hip-hop music misfires, Steve retains his integrity and is true to himself. Further insight into the characters of Rosie and Amy is also offered during the meditative exercise led by Barb at the Eternal Glade Wellness Retreat. Rosie’s admission that she is scared of life and powerlessness reveals an inner fragility that belies her fearless and assertive veneer. Meanwhile, Amy’s lack of serious engagement with the exercise indicates an unwillingness to face vulnerabilities that are rooted in her traumatic childhood.

In this section of the novel, the main narrative’s themes are reflected in the subplot and minor characters. Widowed and lonely, Felicity Woollaston’s experiences echo those of Steve. Tony Taylor also parallels Steve’s character development as he travels beyond the limits of his comfort zone. Tony’s realization that his drive to Letchworth Garden City was surprisingly smooth encapsulates how the fears that prevent individuals from life-enhancing activities are often unfounded. The romantic spark he experiences with Felicity after overcoming his anxiety is “a reminder that sometimes in life, you really should risk the traffic” (230).

In Chapter 47, Osman creates situational irony as Rob Kenna wonders about François Loubet’s identity while playing golf with Mickey Moody, who is later revealed to be Loubet. Kenna’s patronizing underestimation of Mickey as “Not much of a conversationalist but […] always free for a game of golf” (221) underlines the truth of his reflection that he “wouldn’t recognize [Loubet] if he passed him in the street” (221).
